Computer Services exists to provide the computer-related resources necessary for fulfilling this institutional commitment to information delivery. Technology FAQ
How many University computers are on campus?
The University provides over 2,900 computers (in residence halls, classrooms, computer labs, offices and as e-mail check stations.) University computers are on a three-year replacement cycle.
What kind of software is available on the Cedarville network?
Over 150 different software packages — including the Microsoft Office 2007 suite — are available on CedarNet and accessible from any University computer. Students may purchase a personal copy of Microsoft Office 2007 from the University bookstore for about $90.
How fast is the Internet connection?
Cedarville University has an enterprise-level connection to the Internet currently running at 155 megabits per second. This means that students will usually experience excellent broadband performance.
Is there any protection from spam and objectionable websites?
The University uses industry-standard software to filter e-mail spam. In addition, Cedarville subscribes to Internet filtering lists (which block gambling, pornography and other objectionable websites.) Students have the option to block Internet access from their room and/or account to help avoid temptation.
What about wireless connectivity?
Students can access the Internet using their notebook computer and a wireless connection in every building on campus. Outdoor connectivity is available on a large portion of the campus.
What percentage of students bring a notebook computer to campus?
Approximately 2/3 of students bring a computer from home (notebook or desktop.) We refer to these computers as SPCs or Self-Provided Computers. Some students are investigating lower-priced netbooks as a complement to the University-provided dorm computer.
What if I need help with my SPC?
Student technicians are available to help you register your SPC and set up wireless on your notebook. The University provides low-cost repair services for students who are experiencing problems with their computers.
If I buy a computer, should I purchase a Mac or PC?
Both Mac and PC computers are supported on campus. The choice is entirely up to you, and may be influenced by your chosen major. Cedarville computer classrooms and labs are primarily Windows-based, but there are four Mac classrooms available for music, journalism and graphic design majors.
How many computer labs are on campus?
There are five open-access computer labs on campus in addition to the Library, providing about 200 systems for student use. Lab hours of operation range from 7am-11pm weekdays, 9am-11pm Saturdays, and 4pm-11pm Sundays.
What about printing and scanning?
Inkjet printers will be provided in the residence halls through May 2010 (students provide ink and paper for these printers.) Black and white laser printing is free for students in the computer labs. Flatbed scanners are also located in the labs. Color laser printing is available for a small charge.
Is there a recommended cell phone provider?
As part of the new cuMobile initiative, Cedarville University has negotiated discounted product and service pricing with AT & T, Sprint and Verizon cell phone service providers.
