Guest Network Access
Welcome to CedarNet! On our campus, guest computers are referred to as "Self-Provided Computers" (SPCs). SPCs share the University's high-speed Internet connection, but do not have permission to use the software we provide on our University-owned computers.
Visit our Guest Wireless Access page if you wish to use a wireless connection, otherwise follow these instructions for setting up Windows and Mac OS X computers for network use over a wired connection.
In order to successfully connect your SPC to Cedarville's network, three steps must be taken: 1) Setup, 2) Registration, and 3) Proxy Configuration.
1. Setup
- Before you attempt a connection, please verify that you have updated your anti-virus software and your anti-spyware software. This will help prevent the risk of both getting and spreading a virus.
- You will connect using an Ethernet connection. Please verify your device is able to make a connection through one of these methods. (Modem dial-up connections do not work on campus.)
- Active data jacks are marked with a green dot. To use an Ethernet connection, plug into an active wall jack with a standard "Cat. 5" Ethernet cable. It is a little bigger than a phone cord. If you forgot yours or do not have one, the Cedarville University Bookstore in the Stevens Student Center (SSC) has them for a reasonable price.
2. Registration
You will need a username and password to register your computer and use it on Cedarville's network. This can be obtained from your main point of contact with the University*.
- Once on campus, register your computer by opening your browser and going to an off-campus web page (i.e. www.google.com). This will re-direct your browser to the Self-Provided Computer (SPC) registration page.
- Follow the directions shown on the SPC registration page page, using the username and password you were given to register your SPC.
- Restart your computer when registration is complete.
3. Proxy Configuration
Follow the appropriate configuration instructions below for either a Windows or Mac OS X computer. If you do not use Internet Explorer, this information can be adapted to setup other browsers.
Windows with Internet Explorer
- Open Internet Explorer. Click "Tools" > "Internet Options."
- This will open a window with several tabs across the top. Click the "Connections" tab, and click the "LAN Settings" button.
- Check the "Automatically detect settings" box and click "OK."
- Try accessing any off-campus web page (such as www.msn.com). If your computer is configured successfully, you will be prompted for your username and password.
Mac OS X with Internet Explorer
- Open System Preferences (located in the Applications folder or go to the Apple > "System Preferences"), and under "Internet & Network," click on "Network."
- Beside "Location" use the drop-down box to select "Automatic."
- Beside "Show" select "Network Port Configurations." If it is not already checked, check "Built-in Ethernet" to enable your Ethernet connection. (You must have "Built-in Ethernet" listed as a Port Configuration in order to connect to Cedarville's network.)
- Beside "Show" select "Built-in Ethernet."
- Click on the "TCP/IP" tab. Next to "Configure" choose "Using DHCP."
- Click on the "Proxies" tab. In the list of proxies, enable the following and enter the information listed for each one:
- Web Proxy (HTTP): proxy.cedarville.edu Port:: 8080
- Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS): proxy.cedarville.edu Port: 8080
- Automatic Proxy Configuration: http://proxysource.cedarville.edu/spc.pac
- Click on the "Ethernet" tab. Beside "Configure," the drop-down box should be set on "Automatically."
- Save the settings and close System Preferences.
- Configure your browser. If using Internet Explorer (Safari only works on our network when running MacOS 10.3.8 or later):
- Open Internet Explorer. Go to "Explorer" > "Preferences."
- Scroll to "Network" > "Proxies."
- Check "Web Proxy," click "Settings" and enter the following information: proxy.cedarville.edu Port: 8080. "Method" should be set on "Normal." Close the dialogue box.
- Check "Use Web Proxy for all" and click "OK."
- Try accessing any off-campus web page (such as www.msn.com). If your computer is configured successfully, you will be prompted for your username and password.
*Faculty and staff may obtain a guest account for their guests by submitting a Computer Service Request. This page is "Printer Friendly."
Step-by-step configuration information for other browsers, troubleshooting tips, wireless coverage areas, and other helpful information can be found on the SPC website if more information is needed (www.cedarville.edu/spc).
