SPC Minimum Requirements
Cedarville University is pleased to provide an environment in which our students, faculty and staff can connect their personally-owned computers and other network-capable devices to our network and acquire access to their CedarNet accounts and the Internet. In order to gain the most benefit from this we do recommend the following minimum computer configurations.
Minimum Hardware Requirements
- Processor:
- PC: Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon processor (recommend Intel Pentium 4/AMD AthlonXP or newer)
- Mac: PowerPC or Intel-based
- Memory: 256 MB RAM (recommend 512 MB or more)
- Networking:
- Wired: 10/100 Mb Ethernet card
- Wireless: 802.11b wireless adapter (internal or add-on card)
In most cases a computer purchased within the last three years will be sufficient for connection to CedarNet. If you have any questions regarding whether your computer meets the above requirements, we would recommend printing this page and visiting your local computer store to have a staff member confirm its readiness for our network.
If you are wishing to purchase a new computer to bring to campus with you, we have arranged partnerships with Gateway and Dell to provide computers at a discounted rate for our students, faculty and staff. You can visit their web pages by following these links:
For wireless connection details, please visit the main Wireless page or the Frequently Asked Questions About Wireless.
Minimum Software Requirements
- Operating System (any of the following):
- Microsoft Windows 95 (recommend Microsoft Windows XP Home or Professional)
- Mac OSX
- Linux
- Security Software
- Virus scanning software
- Malware scanning software (strongly recommended)
Whatever operating system is used, SPCs are expected to be regularly updated for security (e.g Microsoft Windows Update for Windows-based systems).
- Internet Browser (any of the following)
- Internet Explorer
- Mozilla Firefox
- Safari
In addition to the above minimum requirements, we also recommend the following:
- Office Productivity Software
While this is not a requirement, most students use Microsoft Office or comparable products for papers, spreadsheets, etc. Microsoft Office Professional is provided on University Computers, but not for SPCs. Students may purchase a discounted copy of Microsoft Office Professional from the University Bookstore. Please visit the Software Pricing web page for details. - E-Mail
For e-mail, the University uses GroupWise. Browser and e-mail setup information is available by clicking the 'Setup' button in the menu at left. Visit the Downloads page to obtain GroupWise and installation instructions.

While the following are not required for connection to CedarNet, it is strongly recommended that you have easy access to these items.
- Surge Protector or Uninterruptable Power Supply
- System Restore Software, including Operating System disk and licence information
- Device Drivers (Software that comes with your network card, printer, etc.)
