Please verify that you have:

  • Updated Mac OS X - You should keep your Mac OS X version up-to-date for security purposes.

Configuring Mac OS X for Wireless

Steps 1-6 explain how to configure Mac OS X for use with the wireless network at Cedarville University.

Mac OS X versions 10.3 "Panther" and 10.4 "Tiger" include the software required to use Cedarville's secure wireless network. Cedarville's type of wireless networking is not supported in versions of Mac OS X prior to 10.3 "Panther".

  1. Before you can connect to the wireless network you must update your CedarNet password using a dorm or lab computer.
    • Please follow the instruction sheet "Changing Your Novell Password" included with this handout or follow the instructions on the Computer Services help pages at http://www.cedarville.edu/computerhelp.
    • Use your current password as your "new" password to update your password.

  2. Go to the "Airport Status" menu in the top right-hand corner of your screen on the menu bar and select "Open Internet Connect..."

  3. Click on the 802.1x icon. If you do not see this icon, choose "New 802.1x Connection..." from the "File" menu to create a new one.

  4. Under the "Configuration" pulldown menu, select "Edit Configurations..."

  5. Configure the window that pops up as follows:
In the "Description" field type: Cedarville Wireless.
From the drop-down menu next to the "Network Port" menu select: Airport.
Enter your CedarNet user name and password
In the "Wireless Network" field type: cedarwireless
In the "Authentication" area check: PEAP (nothing else should be checked)
       Click [OK].

  6. In the "Internet Connect" screen, click the [Connect] button to log on to the cedarwireless network.

The first time you connect, you may get a message indicating that the server certificate is not trusted. Click the [Continue] button. You will no longer be asked for a certificate each time you connect.

  7. Once your computer is connected, open Mozilla Firefox or Safari.

  8. If you are not automatically directed to the registration page, type a web address into the browser's address bar (i.e. www.google.com). This will direct you to the SPC registration page.

  9. Click the [Register your Self-Provided Computer (SPC)] button.

  10. Please enter your username and password, and select your SPC type from the drop-down menu. Then click the [Register] button to download the Client Security Agent (CSA) on your machine.

  11. Follow the instructions below to run the Client Security Agent.

  12. You will be prompted to open this file. Select to open the CSA.zip file with "Stuffit Expander". Click [OK]. (Note: If you are not prompted to open with Stuffit Expander, skip to step 13.)

  13. Once the download of the Client Security Agent (CSA) is complete, go to the location where you saved the file and double click on the "CSA" icon.

  14. If your computer was successfully registered, the success page will appear. If your computer failed registration, please follow the on-screen instructions and then repeat steps 7-15.

  15. Please reboot your computer for the registration to take effect.
  16. After your computer restarts, open "System Preferences" (located in the "Applications" folder or on the Dock).

  17. Under the "Internet & Network" section, click on the "Network" icon.

  18. Under the "Location" drop-down menu select "Automatic."

  19. Under the "Show" drop-down menu, select "Network Port Configurations." If it is not already checked, check the checkbox next to "Built-in Ethernet" to enable your Ethernet connection and check the checkbox next to "Airport" to enable wireless (if applicable).

  20. Beside "Show" select "Airport" (wireless) or "Built-In Ethernet" (wired) depending on what you are using.

  21. Click on the "TCP/IP" tab. Under the "Configure" drop-down menu, choose "Using DHCP."

  22. Click on the "Proxies" tab. Under the "Configure Proxies" drop-down menu, select the "Using a PAC file" option. In the "PAC File URL:" field, type the following web address http://proxysource.cedarville.edu/proxy.pac
