Windows Setup for Wireless Network Access


Please verify that you have:

  • An 802.11b/g or 802.11a wireless card that supports WPA-Enterprise security.
  • Updated anti-virus software - McAfee VirusScan is licensed for University students, faculty, and staff. You can download it from the "Downloads" page.
  • Updated anti-spyware software - Spybot - Search & Destroy is available for University students, faculty, and staff. You can download it from the "Downloads" page.
  • Updated Windows - You should keep your Windows version up-to-date for security purposes. Microsoft Windows can be updated by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

Windows Vista Instructions

Configuring Windows Vista for Wireless

Steps 1-10 explain how to configure Windows Vista for use with the wireless network at Cedarville University.

(Note: Some adapters are often bundled with software from the manufacturer. It is recommended that you disable this software and use Microsoft's built-in configuration tool instead.)

  1. Before you can connect to the wireless network you must update your CedarNet password using a dorm or lab computer.
    • Please follow the instruction sheet "Changing Your Novell Password" included with this handout or follow the instructions on the Computer Services help pages at http://www.cedarville.edu/computerhelp.
    • Use your current password as your "new" password to update your password.

  2. Right-click on the network icon in the taskbar (bottom right on the desktop). Select "Connect to a network"





  3. In the window that comes up, you will see the network "cedarwireless" in a list. Select it and click [Connect]



  4. On the next screen, select the option "Enter/select additional log on information"



  5. When prompted, enter your CedarNet username and password. Leave the "Logon domain:" field blank. Click [OK]. Wait for Windows to connect to the cedarwireless network.



  6. When prompted select the "Enter / select additional log on information" option.



  7. Click [OK] to accept the Server Certificate. Wait for Windows to connect to the network.



  8. When Windows connects, it will ask if you want to save the network. Make sure both checkboxes are checked and then click [Close].



  9. Windows will ask to set up a location. Select "Home."

    (Note: Windows may ask for your permission to continue. Click [Continue].)



  10. When Windows connects correctly, a confirmation page will appear showing your new settings. Click [Close].

    Your computer is now connected to cedarwireless and will automatically connect when in range.



  11. Once your computer is connected, open Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer.

  12. If you are not automatically directed to the registration page, type a web address into the browser's address bar (i.e., www.google.com). This will direct you to the SPC registration page.



  13. Click the [Register your Self-Provided Computer (SPC)] button.

  14. Please enter your username and password, and select your SPC type from the drop-down menu. Then click the [Register] button to download the Client Security Agent (CSA).



  15. Follow the instructions below to run the Client Security Agent.

  16. You will be prompted to [Run] or [Save] this application to your system. It is important to [Save] this file to your system so you can execute the application later during the registration process.



  17. Once the download of the Client Security Agent (CSA) is complete, you will be prompted to [Run], [Open Folder] or [Close]. Select [Run] to begin the security scan.



    If you do not receive the options above, go to the location where you saved the file (in step 16) and double-click on the CSA icon.



  18. Click [Run] when Internet Explorer prompts you for approval to run the Client Security Agent.



  19. Click [Allow] when Windows warns of an unidentified program accessing your computer.



  20. If your computer was successfully registered, the success page will appear. If your computer failed registration, please follow the on-screen instructions and then repeat steps 11-21.



  21. Please reboot your computer for the registration to take effect.

  22. After your computer restarts, open Internet Explorer

  23. Under the "Tools", menu select "Internet Options".



  24. In the "Internet Options" window. click on the "Connections" tab. Then click on the [LAN Settings] button.



  25. In the "Local Area Network (LAN) Settings" window, check the checkbox "Automatically detect settings". Make sure nothing else is checked. Click [OK].



  26. Click [OK] to exit the "Internet Options".

    (Note: This procedure only has to be done the first time you connect your computer to CedarNet each semester.)

Windows XP Instructions

Configuring Windows XP for Wireless

Steps 1-16 explain how to configure Windows XP for use with the wireless network at Cedarville University.

  1. Before you can connect to the wireless network you must update your CedarNet password using a dorm or lab computer.

    • Use your current password as your "new" password to update your password.

  2. Right-click on the wireless network icon in the taskbar (bottom right on the desktop). Select "Open Network Connections:"

    You can also find your network connections in [Start] > Control Panel > Network Connections





  3. Right-click on the "Wireless Network Connection". Select "Properties" from the pop-up menu.



  4. The following window should appear. Select the "Wireless Networks" tab, then click [Add].



  5. Configure the window as shown below:
       In the Network name (SSID) field type: cedarwireless (lower case).
       From the drop-down menu next to Network Authentication select: WPA
       From the drop-down menu next to Data encryption select: TKIP



  6. Now select the "Authentication" tab, and configure the window as shown below:
       From the drop-down menu next to EAP type select: Protected EAP (PEAP)
       Check the checkbox: Authenticate as computer when computer information is available



  7. Click on the [Properties] button, and configure the window as shown:
       Check the checkbox: Validate server certificate
       From the drop-down menu under Select Authentication Method select: Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
       Check the checkbox: Enable Fast Reconnect



  8. Click on the [Configure] button, and uncheck the checkbox "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)". Click [OK] twice.



  9. Select the "Connection" tab. Check the checkbox "Connect when this network is in range".



  10. Click [OK] to return to the "Wireless Network Connection Properties" window. If you have previously selected to "Connect when this network is in range", then cedarwireless should have the value (Automatic).



  11. Click [OK] to close all open windows - the configuration is now complete.

  12. Logging on to cedarwireless

  13. You should get a bubble pop-up in the lower-right corner. Click on it to enter your CedarNet username and password.



  14. Type in your CedarNet user name and password. The "Logon domain" field should be empty. Click [OK]. (Note: If you get an error while accepting the certificate or if the logon window pops up again, check that the date set on the computer is correct. Windows will not accept the certificate if the date is incorrect.)



  15. A new bubble will appear in the bottom right corner of your desktop. Click to receive and accept the certificate information.



  16. Click [OK] to the Certificate Validation window that comes up.



  17. You should get another bubble in the lower-right corner of your desktop informing you that the your attempt to connect to the network was successful.



  18. Once your computer is connected, open Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer.
