Services
General Information
Student health care is provided by University Medical Services (UMS), a full-service ambulatory care facility that is located adjacent to the Doden Field House. UMS contracts with several local physicians and a nurse practitioner who come to Cedarville University on a scheduled basis so that health care services are available to students right on campus. UMS is staffed by expert physicians, nurses, and paramedics that love caring for young adults and are committed to providing quality health care. UMS also works closely with area hospitals and specialists to coordinate referrals for students to specialty physicians and for other medical services, such as radiology testing.
Physician and Nursing Services
UMS hires qualified physicians, nurses, and paramedics to provide quality health care for you while you are at Cedarville. With services similar to a family physician office, UMS offers:
- Physician and nursing visits when you are ill or injured.
- Physicals for athletic participation, nursing clinicals, mission endeavors, and some work-related physicals.
- Allergy injections as prescribed by your private allergist.
- Routine and travel immunizations.
- Laboratory services.
- Speciality services such as suture removal and wound care.
- A campus dispensary for prescription medications ordered by a UMS physician.
- Free over-the-counter medications as recommended by UMS medical staff.
- Follow-up visits after discharge from a hospital or urgent care facility.
- Registered dietician visits as ordered by UMS medical staff.
- Referrals for health care needs that are beyond the scope of practice for UMS, such as referrals to area specialists, radiology facilities, urgent care facilities, or local emergency departments.
Emergency Services
Another health care service available to students on campus is Cedarville University Emergency Medical Services (CUEMS), a volunteer EMS ambulance ministry manned with students who are nationally and state-certified EMTs and/or paramedics. CUEMS responds primarily to emergencies on campus; however, CUEMS provides mutual aid to Cedarville Township and the surrounding community when needed. The students who are involved in this ministry volunteer their medical expertise to the Cedarville University family and strive to demonstrate Christ's love and compassion to their fellow students in time of need.
Cost for Services
Most services at UMS are free as a benefit of tuition, regardless of whether or not you have insurance. Examples of free services are: over-the-counter medications, equipment loans, and visits to see the nurse due to illness or injuries. There is a $15 charge for physician and nurse practitioner visits and a nominal charge for prescription medications, immunizations, and lab testing. You will be given a receipt for any fees you incur at UMS. For your convenience, any charges will be placed on your student account. Because UMS is not set up to bill any insurance company, we recommend that you use your receipt and contact your private insurance company or the student health insurance office for any insurance benefits to which you may be entitled.
Scheduling Appointments
All visits to UMS are scheduled by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, call the Nurse Line at 7863 (off-campus: 937-766-7863). If you need to see a physician, the nurse will help you schedule an appointment. If you are extremely ill or have an injury that needs immediate attention and you are unable to call for an appointment, just come to UMS. Walk-in patients will only be seen when the next appointment is available, unless you have a medical emergency.
Allergy Clinic
University Medical Services has an allergy clinic open by appointment during physician hours to assist you in maintaining your allergy injection schedule. Allergy injections are administered if serum and orders from a personal allergist are supplied. There is a nominal fee of $15.00 per semester which helps defray the cost of syringes, Epinephrine on standby, and occasional necessary calls to allergists for questions or clarification of orders.
Routine and Travel Immunizations
University Medical Services provides a travel immunization clinic service to prepare our students for trips that are mission-related, of an educational nature, or personal, both abroad and within the United States. Students visit UMS to obtain an immunization itinerary along with educational material according to the area of travel and nature of the trip. Visits are scheduled with the nursing staff and may include return visits to complete the immunizations indicated on their itinerary. All travel immunization work-ups are designed according to current recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control.
University Medical Services offers a wide range of immunizations. Students are encouraged to be current with regard to the Center for Disease Control's recommended immunizations for the young adult.
Laboratory Services
UMS contracts with a local laboratory so that you have laboratory services available right on campus. For lab testing prescribed by your family doctor, you must bring the order from your doctor to UMS prior to your appointment. UMS will fax the results to the prescribing physician. If you need lab testing that cannot be done at the UMS satellite location or if you would prefer to have your lab testing done directly at the laboratory, please contact a local lab.
Prescription Medications
University Medical Services has physician dispensary pharmacy services available to dispense prescription medications ordered by the staff physician on duty. The pharmacy is licensed by the Ohio Board of Pharmacy and meets all state and local regulations for dispensing medications from an office setting. For your convenience, charges will be placed on your student account with a copy of the transaction given to you at the time of service for any private insurance reimbursement that you may have prescriptive benefits for. Unfortunately, UMS cannot fill outside prescriptions. Prescriptions ordered by your family physician can be filled at any number of local pharmacies in the area. UMS also has many common over-the-counter medications that are available at no cost to the student after an assessment visit with the RN.
Prescriptions written by your family physician can be filled at any local pharmacy.
