Staff List
Julie Moore
Associate Professor, Language & Literature
I am a writer who loves to teach writing and help other writers develop their skills. Before coming to Cedarville University in 1999, I taught for ten years at Wilberforce University, spending six of those years as the Writing Lab Supervisor in Wilberforce's Adult and Continuing Education Program. I bring this experience to my job here, and I enjoy working with the students, faculty, and staff who visit. Stop by soon - I'd love to meet you!
Christy Cunliffe
Senior, Nursing major
Hi. I'm Christy. You might know me by my "e-mail" name, Evelyn. We really are the same person. Christy was an alias I adopted when the government thought I was a Soviet spy, but they eventually cleared my record, so I can safely use either name. I'm a nursing student with a passion for working at the Writing Center. That combination might seem as strange as a physicist who loves chick flicks, but actually, my two interests share a single root: I love to help people improve–either their health or their writing skills, it doesn't matter. So Evelyn or Christy, nursing or writing, I'd love to help.
Jonathan Demers
Junior, History & Political Science Major
Hey there! My name is Jonathan Demers, and I am a junior studying history, political science, and philosophy. My discipline is quite diverse, and I love to discuss all sorts of topics and issues, from urban ministry to open theism. Feel free to bring in any paper on any topic, or even a blue book outline for an upcoming exam (if your professor allows it). I'm also a survivor of the Honors Program, so bring on those unit essays! If you love intellectual conversations, keeping up with sports, reading a good book, or wearing flip flops, then you've found the right guy. Come visit soon!
Stephanie Devine
Junior, Special Education Major
I am a sophomore Special Education Major, originally hailing from Marysville, Ohio. On a good day, you'll find me doing something that simultaneously involves hammocks, Martin guitars, big cities, children, secondhand clothing, raucous shouts at sporting events, pita bread, Nautilus machines, and coloring books. I would also tell you all about my passionate hatred for math, reality TV, and meatloaf were I not so concerned about losing key clients. As both a member of the debate team and staff writer for Cedars, I enjoy working through a wide variety of subjects and genres in writing. I look forward to spending time with you, a cup of instant coffee, and whatever assignment you bring to the not-so-proverbial table.
Hannah Dulis
Junior, Spanish Major
I'm a junior Spanish major. I like to tell people that I'm planning on being an interpreter (because it makes me sound so interesting and important), but my real ambition is to get through college as fast as I can so that I can study cosmetology. I enjoy cooking, singing when nobody's around, and knitting rectangular things (because any other shape is too hard). And I love beards; if you have one, I might stare at your chin, but don't be alarmed.
Chris Garlick
Junior, Mechanical Engineering Major
What's up? My name is Chris Garlick, and I'm a mechanical engineering major. Some of my favorite activities include hanging out with friends, playing guitar, listening to music, and sipping good coffee. I also love learning new things, whether they are from class, friends, or the news. In addition to helping you improve as a writer, I'd love to learn something new through your writing, so stop by with your paper sometime!
Christine Keeports
Senior, Psychology Major
Hey! I'm Christine. I'm a senior psychology major, and I have a French minor. I've lived in Colorado for most of my life, so it was a huge change to come to Cedarville. Besides the humidity and long stretches of rainy days, I've enjoyed my time in Ohio. I really love decorating my dorm room, eating dark chocolate, and basking in sunshine! I'm graduating in December, so I only have this semester to enjoy working at the writing center. I love getting to know people... and one of the best ways is through writing! I'll see you soon.
Jessica Korthals
Senior, English Education major
Hi! My name is Jessica Korthals, and I am a senior High School English Education major. I am from the wonderful state of Iowa, which has even more cornfields than Ohio. I love reading literature, particularly anything by Jane Austen. I also enjoy writing, even if it is just a 10-page paper for Dr. Deardorff. But my favorite thing is helping other people in whatever way I can (especially with writing), whether that's in finding the hidden structure in a paper or rattling off grammar rules using words that hardly anyone understands. Come see me at the writing center, and I'll help you with those two things and anything in between. And I promise to make any grammar I explain understandable.
Emilie Lavallee
Junior, International Studies
Hi, all. I'm Emilie, and I'm a sophomore International Studies (Social Science) major here at Cedarville. I was interested in studying everything, so I chose a major that lets me do just that. I've loved reading (from Plato to J. R. R. Tolkien) ever since I was little, and that love grew into an interest in writing as well. Besides reading and writing, I enjoy friendly philosophical debates, fireplaces, tea, and the discovery of new places—and dialoguing about words, ideas, and papers in the Writing Center, of course. I hope to see you all there!
Asheritah Oana
Senior, English major
I'm a senior English major with lots of minors, mainly because I can't make up my mind as to what I want to do after I graduate. But one thing I know I enjoy is helping people become better writers by working on one paper/project at a time. So whether you're drafting a thesis for Lit Analysis, making an outline for speech class, putting together an HBLT for a Christian Education class, or writing a paper for anything else, stop by and we can chat about how to improve your writing skills.
Steven Palmer
Senior, International Studies major
Hey! I'm Steve Palmer. I'm a laid-back junior majoring in International Studies. Honestly, just about anything you can think of interests me. It's a blessing and a little curse. Here are some things that really interest me (in no particular order)–hammocks, oranges, current events, and video games. I also like figuring out how things work, meeting people, wandering, pondering, being outside, and becoming a hyperlink (look at the way top, I'm clickable!). Some things I detest (oh yes, detest!)–litter, overpriced stuff, and alarm clocks in television commercials (not to mention making important decisions). Anyway, come visit me! It'd be an honor to meet you and chat a bit about your latest scholastic masterpiece.
Lisa Pollock
Junior, Music Major
Hi! My name is Lisa Pollock, and I'm a junior music major (vocal emphasis) with a minor in Spanish. As a vocal major, I have the privilege of singing in a whole bunch of different languages I don't understand—yet! In addition to music, I enjoy languages, linguistics, reading, a rousing good game of Ultimate Frisbee, and tea. I also like talking with people about ideas and being challenged to think more deeply. And here at the Writing Center, we get paid for it! So, come by. I look forward to meeting you.
Nathan Reed
Senior, English major
I'm a junior English major. This means that I've crossed the halfway point in my college experience, which freaks me out a little. You probably need to know that I enjoy stumbling on superb articles of clothing in thrift stores, wearing neckties to class, and waking up to fresh-brewed coffee (my roommate has a coffee pot with a timer). You should also note that I have trouble tolerating oversized t-shirts, Billy Corgan's voice, and the way socks seem to disappear. Stop by the Writing Center. All the cool kids do.
Kelly Shackelford
Senior, Technical and Professional Communication major
I am a technical writer. That basically means I'll make a career out of writing technical documentation to which no one will pay any attention (you know who you are!). I decided to become a tutor because I like helping other students find their "Aha!" moments in writing. Some of my favorite things are science fiction and fantasy books, otters, quilting, hiking, country music, and blue raspberry candy. You will never find me eating cauliflower or posing for silly pictures (too dangerous), nor will you ever find me in an elevator or on Facebook. Come to the Writing Center and we'll catch an "Aha!" moment together.
Naomi Washatka
Senior, International Business Major
Hello! I'm Naomi, a senior International Business major with a passion for foreign films and making lists. Come find me in the writing center and learn why I love everything European, baking, conversation, late-night coffee and even your paper. We can discuss your love or hatred of literature and those awful nominalizations. Or, I'll try to convince you to read more Dickinson, try a Rinnova Dirty Chai, and take time to swing in the nearby Cedarville parks. Regardless, I'll join you in your endeavor to become a brilliant writer. Let's do this writing thing, together.
Jordan Wood
Senior, Psychology major
Hey, hey. My name's Jordan Wood, and I'm a junior psychology major with a penchant for writing. I'm on the Cedarville debate team where I argue with strangers about such cheery topics as torture, prostitution, and global extinction. I'm super interested in people, what makes them tick, what makes them love, what makes them believe, etc. At the Writing Center, I live for the sessions with students who love their own papers and ideas. I look forward to dialoguing with you all about your literary endeavors.
