SPC Setup Instructions: How to Get Connected
There are two major tasks associated with connecting your Self-Provided Computer (SPC) to our campus wireless network.
- Connect your SPC to CedarWireless - this is usually a one-time setup that will remain on your computer unless specific action is taken to remove it (i.e., reinstalling Windows or deleting the wireless network association)
- Register your SPC with our campus management system - this step ensures that your computer meets our minimum requirements for connection to CedarWireless, including current operating system, up-to-date antivirus software, and antimalware software
After completing these steps you will be able to surf the Internet, collect your e-mail from either an Internet source (Google, Yahoo!) or our campus GroupWise servers, and connect to your documents and files stored on our campus network (your H: drive or project drives).
Connecting to CedarWireless
NOTE: If you have never connected to CedarWireless before you will need to reset your CedarNet password (the one you use to log into a University computer, e.g., in a lab or dorm room). You do not have to change your CedarNet password, but you do have to follow the process all the way through.
» Microsoft Windows XP/Vista
NOTE: If you have an older version of Windows (98/ME/2000), please contact our SPC Assistance Counter.
Connecting to CedarWireless just got a lot easier. Our network team has developed a tool that will inspect your computer and configure your wireless adapter to connect to our campus wireless network.
- Download the CedarWireless Configuration Tool from our SPC Download page and save it to your desktop
- Run the CedarWireless Configuration Tool
- Enter your username and CedarNet password, when prompted
» Mac OS X (10.5 - Leopard):
- Choose Apple > System Preferences, and then click Network in the Internet & Network section.
- Select the AirPort service, and then click Advanced.
- Click 802.1X and then do the following:
- Choose User from the Domain pop-up menu
- Click the + button below the Configurations box on the left side of the window, and enter cedarwireless-secure as the name of the configuration

- Type cedarwireless-secure into the Wireless Network field
- Uncheck all Authentications, except PEAP
- Click the OK button, then click the Apply button - you can now close the System Preferences window
» Mac OS X (10.4 - Tiger and earlier)
- Double-click the Macintosh HD icon on your desktop, and choose Applications from the left pane
- Click on the Internet Connect icon to open the Internet Connect application
- Click on the 802.1x icon. If you do not see this icon, choose New 802.1x Connection... from the "File" menu to create a new one.
- Under the Configuration dropdown menu, select Edit Configurations...
- Configure the window that pops up as follows:
- In the Description field type cedarwireless-secure.
- From the drop-down menu next to the Network Port menu select: Airport.
- Enter your CedarNet user name and password
- In the Wireless Network field type cedarwireless-secure
- In the Authentication area check: PEAP (nothing else should be checked)
- Click the OK button
- In the Internet Connect screen, click the Connect button to log on to the cedarwireless-secure network.
NOTE: The first time you connect, you may get a message indicating that the server certificate is not trusted. Click the Continue button. You will no longer be asked for a certificate each time you connect.
Register Your Computer with our Campus Management System
Registration is required for accessing our campus network with your personally-owned computer. This process is initiated through an Internet browser by downloading a run-once agent that will scan your computer to ensure it meets our minimum requirements.
- Download the Client Security Agent
- Open an Internet browser (e.g., Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox), and direct the browser to an Internet site that is off-campus (e.g., www.yahoo.com). You will be automatically redirected to our campus management registration page.
- Click the Register your Self-Provided Computer (SPC) button.
- Enter your CedarNet username and password, and select your SPC type from the drop-down menu.
- Click the Register button to download the Client Security Agent (CSA) to your desktop.
- Select the Save option when you are prompted to Run or Save this application to your system - this will place a Client Security Agent icon on your computer's desktop for use later, if necessary.
- Run the Client Security Agent
- Click the Run button once the download of the Client Security Agent (CSA) has completed.
- Click the Allow button if Windows warns of an unidentified program accessing your computer.
- Wait while the CSA examines your computer to ensure that it meets the minimum requirements for connecting to our campus network.
- Restart your computer
- When the CSA has completed its scan and you have received the Registration Successful notice, close all programs and restart your computer.
- If you do not receive the Registration Successful notice, follow the instructions provided on your computer to resolve the issues indicated, then perform step 2 again to re-scan your system.
Congratulations you are now ready to connect to our campus network with your Self-Provided Computer.
