The Luke Commission
Mission: The mission of The Luke Commission is to offer healthcare to those in rural areas of Swaziland and southern Africa who cannot reach medical facilities due to poverty, lack of transport and resources.
Vision: The vision of The Luke Commission is to become a catalyst for Christians to serve their communities with compassionate medical care in the name of Jesus Christ in southern Africa.
Ministry Description and Results
The Luke Commission is named after the New Testament's Dr. Luke. The VanderWals' desire, since they were both children, is to tell others about Jesus Christ and His love for them.
The Luke Commission team, including medical personnel and national staff members, travel to remote "bush" communities and schools to offer a variety of free services and items including medical assistance & medicines, HIV testing, counseling and educational handouts, optical diagnoses & eyecare.
History
The Luke Commission was founded in 2004 by Dr. Harry and Echo VanderWal to take medical missions to the bush in Swaziland, southern Africa. Since then, the VanderWals have served in Swaziland six terms: conducting more than 100 mobile clinics throughout the country.
The Luke Commission is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization from the United States of America. It is funded by individuals and churches in the U.S.A. and Canada, who donate their time and their money to enable the VanderWals to buy medical supplies, medications, eyeglasses, and clothes. In turn, these are given free to the Swazi people treated at the mobile clinics. The VanderWals employ a team of 14 Swazi translators. They also are assisted by Americans who come as short-term volunteers.
