Hey Guys,
I am parusing the college world looking for a place where God would have me. I am just curious if anyone can let me know: how successful are students at Cedarville at paying for their college education. I am a Missionary kid from Northern Michigan (My parents work at a camp as full-time missionaries) do any of you perchance happen to know where Fairview is?) My family is in no way shape or form on the wealthy side, but I would like to be able to attend a christian college. I get good grades and got a pretty good score on the ACT, but know that this will not be enough. I was also wondering about athletic scholarships. How easy (or hard) is it to get funding for athletic skill? I would like to play baseball. From the colleges that I have checked out so far I have been firmly informed that it is either impossible or exhausting for one person to participate in both sports and music (vocal) just wondering if there was any advice out there. Well you all have a good day.

Hey Brandon,

I was just accepted at Cedarville, so although I'm not a student yet, I will be, and I really wanted to throw in my two cents. I'm a missionary kid as well, so I know how difficult it is to find funds for college. Cedarville offers one scholarship that I know of for mks (I think it's $1000/year). Besides that, the government offers grants for low-income families (and we both know that missionaries aren't wealthy) so I would advise you to file the FAFSA asap to get that free money. You also mentioned that you are doing pretty well academically. There are many academic scholarships available, so you should contact the admissions office about that. And if you've been involved in the ministry, or are planning to go into the ministry, I know there are several scholarships for leadership skills and ministry plans.

There are also numerous outside scholarships available. Go to fastweb.com (my personal favorite) or other sites to find out what scholarships you may qualify for.

It's true that it's a lot of work (I'm applying for close to 20 schoalrships), but it's well worth the time. I've also found the CU staff very helpful in answering all my questions, so don't be afraid to call them about anything.

Hope I've helped!

Brandon:

Thanks for your post to the forum.

Cedarville offers a variety of scholarships you could qualify for.  The Faculty/President's Scholarships are available to students who earned above a 3.0 GPA as well as a 25 or higher on the ACT, or a 1120 or higher on the SAT.  Those scholarships range from $1,000-$2,500 and are renewable.

There are also several leadership scholarships available.  You can apply for those by using one application by clicking here. The highest award, (CU Scholar) is 1/2 tuition!

We also offer a Ministry Grant which I think AOANA was referring to in the above post.  The grant is for students whose parents are in full-time ministry.  That grant ranges from $500-$2,000/year and is renewable.

I would also encourage you to visit fastweb.com.  It is one of the more comprehensive scholarship search engines out there.  Our students are very successful at bringing in outside funds and grants.

Many students also work on campus as students.  Here's an example:  If you work 10 hours a week on campus for two semesters, you would have made $1,500.  If you work 15 hours a week for two semesters, you would bring in close to $2,000!

As a student at CU, I also worked in the summers.  Over the course of the summer, I was able to work and save between $3,000-$5,000 depending on the summer.  Obviously, opportunities to work over the summer vary from student to student, but there are creative ways to pay for your Cedarville education.

Cedarville also offers governmental grants and loans.  Be sure to be in touch with our financial aid office early on and fill out that FASFA as soon as possible!

I hope the information above his helpful.  Feel free to contact me if you have further questions.

In Him,

Aaron

Thanks for replying.

AMahl- I checked and I am definetily do not have a good enough ACT to get the cedarville scholar award, I have the GPA, but not the ACT score. I am already logged into fastweb and have been using it for a couple of months. and you put the cedarville scholar award in the same sentence with leadership awards, as far as I can tell the scholar award is for grades and scores, and leadership awards are for what you have done in the past as a leader, right? just curious, and I do plan to work on campus, but I still know that I will need to find lots more aid if I am not going to go into massive debt.

AOANA- thanks for replying, I am sure that this next semester will be filled with applying for scholarships, but unless I net a big one I will probably still be short on the money.

My only hope financially is that I can keep the debt to a minimum, but we will see.
Have a great day

It's been a struggle with me finacially to go to Cedarville. And I'm going to be there a year more than I thought. But coming to CU was the best decision I've ever made! I have learned and grown so much! There are opportunities out there, work hard and it'll work out!

Brandon:

The CU Scholar award is a leadership scholarship.  While you must have the test scores and GPA to be considered, after that point, it is based on leadership skills.

Your time investment in FastWeb and other scholarship opportunities will pay dividends. I look forward to seeing how God will provide for your education.
