Linux is a popular free and open-source operating system that can be installed alongside Windows or Mac OS X, or function as a replacement for them entirely. Here are a few of the most popular versions:

Ubuntu

Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution, and as such, it is compatible with numerous free applications, from office suites such as OpenOffice, to a large assortment of games and other programs. It also has a substantial online knowledge base and forum.

Linux Mint

Linux Mint is a more user-friendly version of Ubuntu and retains all of Ubuntu's application compatibility, while also featuring native support for CD and DVD playback, and greater driver compatibility with hardware components.
