Since all the printers have been removed from the dorm rooms, many students have brought wireless printers to use in their rooms.  

Wireless printers have to be connected to the cu-manual network by a manual registration process.  To start this process, go to the SPC website and find "Connection Help" and then scroll down to find manual registration. (Or click on the link provided).

You will have to log into CedarNet, and then you will be asked for the MAC (Manual Access Control) Address for your printer. (The address will be a string of numbers and letters looking like this: 00:11:22:aa:bb:cc)  Depending on your printer, it will have the MAC address in one of a few places, but generally, it's located in the Network Settings area.

Upon the completion of that form, an email with your information will be sent to the Cedarville network team and they will register your printer on the network, and then send you an email that includes the IP address of your printer and a network key.  

Once you get the email, bring your printer and your computer (and appropriate printer CDs and cables) down to the SPC counter and we'll finish the setup for you.

IF you feel comfortable with the innards of your operating system, here's some instructions that may or may not allow you to set up your printer without our help.

1. Install your printer drivers/software. The specific processes differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, but they should be relatively simple.

2. (Windows XP) Open Control Panel > Printers & Faxes
(Windows Vista/7) Open Start Menu > Printers & Devices
  (Mac OS X) Open System Preferences > Print & Fax

3.  (Windows) Click "Add Printer"
  (Mac OS X) Click the "+" at the bottom of the list of printers

4. (Windows) Proceed through the wizard, select "Network Printer" not "Local Printer" and allow Windows to futilely search for your printer. Then set up your printer manually by adding a new port.  The type of the port should be "Standard TCP/IP Port".

(Mac OS X) In the window that opens, click the IP tab and select "Internet Printer Protocol - IPP" 

5.  (Windows XP) Proceed through the wizard, and enter the IP address that you got in the email in the field that's labelled "Printer name or IP Address" In the field labelled "Port Name" enter a recognizable name for your printer.

(Mac OS X) Enter the IP address in the "Address" field and leave the "Queue" field blank.

6.  Your computer should detect the printer and use the correct drivers to connect to it.  If an error occurs, it could be that the port you just created is not selected as the default for your printer.  To fix this, go to your printer's properties (Mac: Preferences) and make sure the box next to the "TCP/IP" port is checked, and the only one checked.
