I imagine you see some of both, but what would you all recommend - tote bags/messenger bags or a regular backpack? I think the bags are a lot cuter - but the backpack is maybe more practical? What do most students use? Advice? I've been looking around but haven't bought anything yet! Thanks!

I would say it depends on if you use binders or notebooks or folders for your classes. It seems that binders would take up more room than notebooks or folders, so depending on what you like, you may be able to use a messenger bag with less space. It also depends, I think, on whether you study in your room or go elsewhere, like the library. If you want to study somewhere and have to carry a lot of books, you'll probably want a good backpack. I have a normal backpack and use binders, and I still sometimes had trouble taking all of my stuff to the library. Although, it's true that there are good quality messenger bags out there, so you can just keep these things in mind when considering your options.

Yeah, like Sarah said (hey, Sarah!), it does depend. My roommate this year used a bag most of the time, because her books weren't huge and she used folders (I think). I, on the other hand, have absolutely ginormous programming textbooks and I use a 3-ring binder with dividers for my notes in non-computer based classes, so I use a backpack. Personally, I gave up a long time ago even attempting to use a 'cute' bag, because they just weren't even remotely practical for me, heh. I dunno what major you're intending, but if it's something that will require heavy textbooks, ie. nursing, I'd probably suggest a backpack. Most of my nursing friends use backpacks, and it'd probably be a lot more practical, since it would distribute the weight better than a bag usually does.

I'm an incoming freshman for Fall 2010 and had this same question a couple months ago. My solution is that I got a good quality (slightly more expensive) backpack and then went to Goodwill thrift store for a cheap shoulder-bag. The other thing I realized is that each day's schedule varies. So if I have a couple of classes the one day, I'll just take my shoulder bag which fits 2 standard notebooks, my Bible & the daily essentials...where as on busier days, I'll take the backpack for all the text books & binders.
When I've been on campus it looks like everyone has different bags so whatever you get, don't worry - you won't stand out in the crowd (unless you get a bright yellow one...but even then they'll probably think you went for one of CU's colors!) ------------------------- :-) Class of 2014- Hoping to be a Psych Major |

Yup. I have one of each and switch them up. It just depends what you're doing that day. I personally love bags and would love to have one to match every outfit so I've been accumulating a small collection.

I do the same thing, only i use two backpacks and a messenger bag.
i have a backppack that looks like its safari time for those late night campouts in the library, (this thing holds everything, Columbia is awesome at that!) if you have seen UP the movie think of the boy's backpack and give it steriods. then you have shoulder bag class (messenger) and then a baby size backpack for longboarding (or biking) its easier to ride (i think)when the bag is on your back (aligned with your body wieght) then hanging off to one side, then you are off balance. I have used both over my years at Cedarville. I am using a messenger bag this year because most my classes do not require me to carry my books all the time. However, earlier in my career at Cedarville I carried a backpack because most of my classes required that I bring my books everyday. It really just depends on the classes you are taking.

You definitely see both types of bags on campus. I have found it more practical to use a backpack. It saves your shoulder if you have a lot of books to tote around. I actually have both and alternate them depending on how much stuff I have to carry around for the day.
