Hello. Me again.
My mom is trying to figure out the best way for me to get money from home while I'm away. Do most people use a local bank, a bank at home, ATM card, check card, etc? The only ATM on campus is 5/3rd Bank and we have a different one at home. Thanks for all your help in answering my (and my mom's) eight bazillion questions. I've always used the cashier's office to get money. You can write them a check to deposit money into your student account, then after the two day processing period you can get up to $50 per day in cash from the cashier's office from your student account. Otherwise, you can still get money out of the ATM on campus, but there will be a couple of dollars fee per transaction.

So does that work for having your parents send you money every few weeks? My mom is looking for a way to be able to send me some money every month or so while I'm gone.

Elizabeth,
I'm the parent of an incoming freshman. If the student has money in their student account can they withdraw up to $50 per day as long as there are sufficient funds? Is there any wait period? Thanks, Lynda |

I generally get cash back from Walmart. I have a debit card from a bank on the east coast that they don't have in Ohio, so the easiest thing for me to is just select cash back whenever I make a purchase. It works at some super markets, too.

There are also two banks that are within walking distance of campus. I used Huntington Bank before coming to Cedarville so I was glad to find out they had an actual branch office in Cedarville (right across from the Subway). It's worked really well for me and I like having an actual branch nearby in case I need to talk in person with anyone from the bank. There's also an ATM outside to get money out whenever I need. The other bank is U.S. Bank and it's just another two blocks down the street from Huntington.

I recently found out you need to be careful about having people send money direct into your student account as it might come in as 'aid' which could adjust what you get in Federal Aid later. Particularly if your Mom's sending you money for gas/clothes/coffee etc - you don't want that getting taken out of your account to pay for books/fines etc.
What I've done (as I have a similar arrangement with someone sending me money monthly) is to open a bank account with Wright Patt Credit Union [you'll be entitled to open an account as soon as you're 'residing' within Greene County, Ohio] and your Mom just has to instruct her bank to 'wire' money to your account. It's very easy to do, can be done on-line and is normally free. It only takes about 4 days and the money is there for you. If you want somewhere closer to campus there are a couple banks in Cedarville (US Bank & Huntington - both of whom apparently have 'deals' for new students opening accounts), but also it's easy enough to get to Xenia, Springfield, Dayton or Columbus where there are branches of virtually every national bank. You may find that opening your own account with a local branch of the same bank where your Mom banks (ie if she's with Fifth-Third, open an account with Fifth-Third in Xenia or Dayton) and you'll find that most of the fees are reduced/removed! I also looked at what my bank will charge me for using particular ATM's. Getting cash-back in store is normally cheaper/free depending on which bank you're with! ------------------------- :-) Class of 2014- Hoping to be a Psych Major |

Dani,
My local bank does not have a branch in Cedarville or anywhere nearby, and I don't think any of the banks near Cedarville exist near me at home. My mom set it up so that she can transfer money electronically online from her account to mine, and has an automatic monthly transfer arranged as well. I can write checks from that account to deposit at the cashier's office, and always keep at least $50 in my student account so I can get at least that much on short notice. Every time I take cash out of my student account I write a check for the same amount so that it will be replentished for the next time. Lynda, The cashier's office does require a wait period of two days before checks will appear deposited in your student account, but there is no wait period on withdrawals. The cashier's is open every weekday until 4pm; I often will stop by there and check my mail at the same time after lunch. ------------------------- Class of 2013 and a member of the facebook group.
