I am filing my FAFSFA online claiming myself. i also have filed my taxes. i recieve no finacial aid from my parents. i have been out of the house for over a year and a half. I am also already excepted for the fall sem of 06 at CU. Can i still attend with out a co-signer? I know public colleges i can, but i dont know how private schools do this. i am very aware of the fact that i am not 24, a veteran, or married. But the fact still remains i pay for everything myself. i am independent in the eyes of the government and from my parents. please help me attend CU in the fall. Thank you, Carla Tenuta

Carla,

It appears that you have a good understanding of the qualifications to become an independent student.  On the FAFSA you have a series of questions that will determine your status of dependent or independent.  Unfornatuately the fact that you are not living at home and have filed your own taxes is not the crucial information in determining status.   According to the definitions on the FAFSA you will considered a dependent student.  Cedarville will usually follow the FAFSA decision about your dependent/independent status.  We would be willing to make you an independent student if you were taken from your family by the court system.  However, leaving you family appears to have been your decision and that will not make you independent.

As to the question of a co-signer.  I am assuming you are referring to an Alternative Loan.  It is to your advantage for you to get a co-signer, you will get a better interest rate on your loan.

Please contact me if you have additional questions.

Hey, yeah i do have a few more questions. i drove up to ohio from north carolina two weeks ago, just for the reason to explain the whole moving out thing and then the guy i went up to see (mike dorsey) quits or whatever and he was supposed to help me with it. he has all the paper work in his files and i am just getting frustrsted that i might have to do all the work again. My lawyer said it was pointless to go to court because of my age..but then again it is ALL explained in my paper work.  Some guy in CU's financial aids office said he would call me back with wether or not he had found my paperwork but it has been about a week. I am just at a loss at what to do. i really what love to attend, i am already accepted for the fall, but do not know what to do about payment. my parents do not approve of a Christian school and will not help at all. If you can give me some alternative answers that would be great. the past sem and a half so far CU has not helped me. it is the same thing and they still say we can prob. get you in but never do anything about it. But i need to know by a weeks time or so, so i know where to transfer to in the fall. I am currently at NCSU and am very unhappy so i know for a fact that i will not be attending it just depends on who is able to take me in the fall. Just email me back to see if you can help. I would hate to give up since i have been trying for over a semester. Please help me, Carla Tenuta.

Carla:

Is your situation explained on your application or are you referring to other paperwork?

It is described in other paper work from my doctor, guidance counselor and from me. If you want the info from my lawyer, just tell me.
