Access Task Manager
Before you start…
Window’s Task Manager is a very useful tool for a number of reasons. You can use Window’s Task Manager to:
- View several system performance metrics.
- View detailed information about all of the applications (software) and processes (tasks) that are currently running on your computer.
- End applications that are not responding.

Accessing Task Manager
Method 1
- Press and hold down the following keys: [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Del].
- Click “Start Task Manager.”
- Choose either the “Applications,” “Performance,” or “Processes” tab.
Method 2
- Press and hold down the following keys: [Ctrl] + [Shift] + [Esc] keys.
- Choose either the “Applications,” “Performance,” or “Processes” tab.
Method 3
- Right-click the task bar (the blue bar that contains the Pearl/Start Button).
- Click “Start Task Manager.”
- Choose either the “Applications,” “Performance,” or “Processes” tab.
Method 4
- Right-click your desktop.
- Select “New” > Click “Shortcut.”
- Type “taskmgr.exe” into the text box that pops up > Choose [Next].
- Type “Task Manager” into the pop-up dialogue box > Select [Finish].
- Double-click the new icon to open the Task Manager. Choose either the “Applications,” “Performance,” or “Processes” tab.
Ending a non-responsive program
After opening Task Manager,
- Select the “Applications” tab.
- Click the task that is not responding.
- Click [End Task]. If a dialogue box displays explaining the program is not responding, click [End Now].
