Back up Your Files

Computer Services routinely backs up the files you store on network drives H, J, S and T.

Users are responsible for performing routine backups of data on their local drive (e.g., C: drive).

  • If you choose to back up your files on the C: drive, you should copy the backup file to some other media (e.g., recordable CD, USB flash drive, etc.) as well for safekeeping.
  • Learn how to burn files to a CD

** We recommend saving critical files in two locations to help prevent data loss.  **

Hints

  • Performing a backup is the easy part; remembering to do it is harder.
  • Develop a plan (e.g., every Friday, every payday, etc.) to help you remember to do periodic backups of your most important documents.
  • You may want to create a desktop shortcut for "Windows Backup" or "Winzip."
  • For extra protection, rotate different kinds of storage (recordable CD, USB memory stick, etc.) so that the new backup does not over-write the latest backup.

Create a Backups Folder on the C: Drive

  1. Go to [Start] > "My Computer" > "Local Disk (C:)"
  2. Go to "File" > "New" > "Folder"
  3. Name the new folder "Backups"

Use Windows XP Backup

You may need to be logged in as a local administrator to perform the backup.

  1. Go to "Start" > "All Programs" > "Accessories" > "System Tools" > "Backup"
  2. The "Backup or Restore Wizard" will open > Click [Next]
  3. Select "Back up files and settings" > Click [Next]
  4. Select "Let me choose what to back up" > Click [Next]
  5. In the left-hand panel, click [+] next to "My Computer" > Click [+] next to "Local Disk (C:)"
  6. Check the box next to each directory that you want to backup.
  7. Click [Next]
  8. Under "Choose a place to save your backup:," click [Browse...] > Choose one of the following locations:
    • The "Backups" folder you created in the C: drive under "My Computer"
    • The D: drive, if you have inserted a recordable disc (CD-R) in the disc drive.
    • The E: drive, if you have connected your portable storage device (flash drive) to a USB port.
  9. Browse to the location where you want to save your backup > Click [Save]
  10. Click [Next]
  11. If you wish, click [Advanced...] to schedule your backup to run automatically.
  12. Click [Finish] > [Close]
