Font Facts and Fun!

Perhaps you are ready to change your "look" (... and I'm not talking about hairstyles here). There are a couple of options.

You can get new Windows fonts off a Cedarnet drive:

  1. Click on the [Start] button
  2. Click on "Control Panel"
  3. Click on "Appearance & Themes"
  4. Click on the "Fonts" icon (left side of screen under the "See Also" section)
  5. A list of Fonts will appear. You can double-click on a font to preview it.
  6. From the top toolbar, Choose "File" > Choose "Install New Font"
  7. In the "Drives" drop-down box, click on the down-arrow that is located on the right-hand side of the Drives drop-down box > Click on the "i: drive"
  8. Scroll down through the list of folders in the left-hand column until you come to the "FONTS" folder > Double-click on it
  9. Scroll down through the list of fonts in the upper half of the dialog box. When you see one you want to install on your machine, hold down the [Ctrl] key and click on the font name. (Note: As long as you hold down the [Ctrl] key you can select several individual fonts.)
  10. When you have chosen all of the fonts you want, click the [OK] button. (Warning: do not click on the [Select All] button. The more fonts you add to Windows, the slower it will perform. Only choose the fonts you will really use. You can always come back to this point and remove unwanted fonts or add others.)

Search for fonts on the Internet:

  1. Use a search engine (like Google) to search for "free fonts"
  2. When you find a font you want, download the file (there should be a button for you to click to download from the website).
  3. Save the font file where you can locate it again ... but not in the Fonts folder (Try your desktop or H: drive)
  4. Find the zipped folder where you saved it and extract the file to C:\WINDOWS\Fonts (For instructions on how to extract the font from the file, see How to extract files from a zipped compressed folder).
  5. To ensure that you followed these steps correctly, go to Start > My Computer > Local Disk (C:) > WINDOWS > Fonts and find the name of the font you downloaded.
  6. Install the font using the instructions above from where you saved the downloaded font.
  7. After you have extracted and installed the font, close and reopen the program you are using to find the new font.

Enlarging type size on the Internet

Some of you have asked if the type size on the Internet can be enlarged. Here is a quick way to make the change.

  1. Go out to the web using your browser (i.e., Internet Explorer)
  2. Open the website you are interested in.
  3. To enlarge website display > Hold down the [Ctrl] button and scroll down on your mouse wheel
  4. To shrink website display > Hold down the [Ctrl] button and scroll up on your mouse wheel
