Google Mail: Change the Default Font for Read/Compose

Before you start…

Google Mail Labs is “a testing ground for experimental features that aren’t quite ready for primetime.” These labs could change or completely disappear at any time.

Google Mail has an available lab that allows you set a new default font for your messages.

Enable the default text styling lab

  1. Open Google Mail.
  2. Click the [Settings] (gear) icon > Choose “Settings” from the resulting menu.
  3. Click the [Labs] tab.
  4. Find the “Default Text Styling” Lab and click the radio button to “Enable” it.
  5. Click [Save Changes].

Set the default font

  1. Open Google Mail.
  2. Click the [Settings] (gear) icon > Choose “Settings” from the resulting menu.
  3. In the [General] tab, find “Default text style:”
  4. Use the icons above the text box to change the text style (use the textbox to preview the changes you make).
  5. Click [Save Changes].
