Google Mail: Create Templates

Before you start…

Google Mail Labs is “a testing ground for experimental features that aren’t quite ready for primetime.” These labs could change or completely disappear at any time.

Google Mail has an available lab that allows you to create email templates.

Enable the Canned Responses Lab

  1. Navigate to Cedarville.edu/Google.
  2. Click the "Mail" link and log in.
  3. Click the gear-shaped drop-down > Choose “Settings” from the resulting menu.
  4. Click the [Labs] tab.
  5. Find the “Canned Responses” lab and click the radio button to “Enable” it.
  6. Click [Save Changes].

Save a Message as a Template

  1. In Google Mail, click [Compose] and compose the message, leaving the “Subject:” and “To:” fields empty.
  2. Click “Canned responses” (beneath the “Subject” line) > Select “New canned response…” (a dialogue box will open)
  3. Enter a name for your template.
  4. Click [OK].

Create a New Message or Reply Using a Template (or “Canned Response”)

  1. In Google Mail, click [Compose] to start a new message (or click the “Reply” icon if replying).
  2. Click “Canned responses.”
  3. Select the desired template under “Insert.”
  4. Fill the “To:” and “Subject:” fields.
  5. Edit the message as needed.
  6. Click [Send].

Edit a Message Template

  1. In Google Mail, click [Compose] to begin a new message.
  2. Click “Canned responses.”
  3. Select the desired template under “Insert.”
  4. Make the desired changes.
  5. Click “Canned responses” again.
  6. Click the same template under “Save.”
  7. Click [OK].
