Google Mail: Use Mailto Links with Gmail

To set Gmail as the default mail application for mailto links in Google Chrome

At this time, the option for setting Gmail as the default email application for “mailto” links (links that direct you to a new message in your email application directed towards a specific email address) in Google Chrome is unreliable.

Warning!

When you log in to Gmail, Chrome may prompt you to set “Cedarville University Mail” Gmail as the default email application for mailto links. Please ignore this message, and do not interact with it at all.

If you do set “Cedarville University Mail” as the default mail application for mailto links in Chrome, you may never be able to switch to using a desktop email client (for example, Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, or Mozilla Firefox) as the default mail application for mailto links in Chrome. After you set Gmail as the default mail application for mailto links in Chrome, it is very hard to set a desktop email client as the default email application for mailto links. In fact, you may not be able to do so. Information technology recommends that you do not set Gmail as the default mail application for mailto links in Chrome.

If you would like a default email application for mailto links in Google Chrome, consider using Microsoft Outlook, which will be available to faculty and staff later this year. For more information about Microsoft Outlook, see "Is Microsoft Outlook Right for Me?".
