There are a number of different ways you can use the iPad's touch features to navigate the device. Below are a few tips for navigating the iPad:

  • Swipe your finger across the screen to change screen OR touch to the right/left of the dots at the buttom of your display.
  • If you are viewing a large document but want to quickly navigate the the top of a page, touch the title bar at the top of the screen (the title bar contains the battery and time).
  • To zoom in on a webpage or text, place two fingers on the screen and move them apart. To zoom out, use two fingers to "pinch" the screen (move your two fingers closer together).

Organize your applications

As you use your iPad, you will likely accumulate a large number of apps that have various purposes. There are a number of different ways you can organize these apps for easy use.

By Page

A number of users choose to organize their apps by page. A “page” is a screen that contains apps. You get to a given page by swiping your finger across the iPad either to the right or left. For example, one page may be used to hold productivity apps, while another holds only games. To move an app to another page:

  1. Touch and hold the icon for any app on your iPad. After approximately two seconds, your app icons will begin to “wiggle.” Apps you have installed will also show a small “X” that you can press to delete the app.
  2. Touch and hold your finger on the app you would like to move.
  3. Drag the app icon to the edge of the iPad. The app will automatically move to the next page.
  4. Lift your finger to let go of the app icon.
  5. Press the home button (located at the bottom of the device) to exit arrange mode.

By Folder:

You can also organize your apps into folders that you can name. For example, you could place all of your apps about news into a folder and name it “News.” To move an app into a folder:

  1. Touch and hold the icon for any app on your iPad. After approximately two seconds, your app icons will begin to “wiggle.” Apps you have installed will also show a small “X” that you can press to delete the app.
  2. Touch and hold your finger on the app you would like to move into a folder.
  3. Drag the app icon onto the app you would like to group it with. A folder will automatically be created (if it does not already exist). The folder manager will automatically open.
  4. To change the name of the folder, tap the white text box that contains the title.
  5. Type in the name you would like to give to the folder.
  6. Touch “Done.”
  7. Press the home button to exit arrange mode.

Add Apps to Lower Tray:

By default, four apps are stored in the lower tray. You can store up to six apps on the tray. To add an app to the tray:

  1. Touch and hold the icon for any app on your iPad. After approximately two seconds, your app icons will begin to “wiggle.” Apps you have installed will also show a small “X” that you can press to delete the app.
  2. Touch and hold your finger on the app you would like to move to the tray.
  3. Drag the app icon down to the tray. Any apps near it will automatically reorganize.
  4. Press the home button to exit arrange mode.
