Install Fonts
There are several methods to discover and download new fonts.
To find a list of default Windows fonts, follow these instructions:
- Click [Start] > [My Computer].
- Under “Other places” in the left-hand pane, Click “Control Panel.”
- In “Category view,” Click [Appearance and Themes] > Click “Fonts” under “See Also” on the left-hand side.
- In “Classic View,” Double-click the “Fonts” folder.
Or
- Click [Start] > [My Computer] > Double-click “Local Disk (C:)”
- If you see the “These files are hidden” error message, Click [Show the contents of this drive] under “System Tasks.”
- Double-click “WINDOWS” > “Fonts.”
Windows will add any new, downloaded custom fonts to this list.
If you like to download and use many custom fonts (i.e., from the Internet), you will want to backup your custom font files to either a portable storage device or the "docs" folder on your C: drive. Windows default fonts are the only fonts reinstalled on your computer if it needs service or is replaced. Custom fonts residing in C:\WINDOWS\Fonts will be lost.
Download custom fonts from the Internet
- Search for “free fonts” on any search engine (e.g., Google). Or, go here.
- Click [Download] next to the font you would like.
- [Save] the file to your Desktop.
- Locate the zipped file > Right-click > Select “Extract All...”
- Click [Next] > Click [Browse...].
- In the “Select a destination” window, select “My Computer” > “Local Disk (C:)” > “WINDOWS” > “Fonts” > [OK].
- Under “Files will be extracted to this directory:” it should say “C:\WINDOWS\Fonts.”
- Click [Next] > [Finish].
Windows will automatically add your downloaded custom font to the list of available fonts in Microsoft Office.
The custom font is downloaded to your C: drive, not to the network. If you create a document with a custom font and need to open it on another computer, you will need to install the custom font on the other computer as well.
