Internet: Change Default Search Engine in Internet Explorer

The default search provider for Internet Explorer is now "Live Search" which uses the "Bing" search engine. Follow these instructions to change your default search provider to something more familiar (e.g., Google, Yahoo, etc.).

Internet Explorer 7

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Locate the down-arrow next to the magnifying glass icon in the upper-right of your screen.
  3. Click on the down-arrow > Choose "Find More Providers..."
  4. A list of alternate search engines will display.  Click to choose one of the listings as your new search engine.
  5. An "Add Search Provider" dialog box will open.
  6. Click the checkbox labeled "Make this my default search provider."
  7. Click on the [Add Provider] button.
  8. Click on the down-arrow next to the magnifying glass icon in the upper-right of your screen again > Verify that your new search engine is marked as the (Default).

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. In the upper-right corner of your secreen, click "Tools" > "Internet Options."
  3. Under "Search" press [Settings].
  4. Make sure "Search Providers" is selected. Click "Find more search providers..." at the bottom of the window.
  5. Click the provider you would like to use.
  6. Click [Add to Internet Explorer].
  7. Click [Add] if an additional window appears.

Internet Explorer 9

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click to Gear located at the top right-hand corner of the browser to open the Tools menu.
  3. Under "Search" press [Settings].
  4. Make sure "Search Providers" is selected. Click "Find more search providers..." at the bottom of the window.
  5. Click the provider you would like to use.
  6. Click [Add to Internet Explorer].
  7. Click [Add] if an additional window appears.
