Make Office 2007 or 2010 Documents Compatible With Office 2003 or 97

Before you start...

If you have a personal or home computer without Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010, you may want to download the Compatibility Pack to convert the document to an Office 2003 file.

Compatibility Checker

If you used any of the new features in your document, you will encounter problems when you try to convert it to an older Office document. Use the "compatibility checker" to find these problems before converting your document.

Office 2007

Check Compatibility

  1. Click the [Microsoft Office Button] Button image > “Prepare" > “Run Compatibility Checker.”
  2. A list of any features that will not run on the older version will appear.
  3. Click the help link to review your options for manually fixing the incompatible features. Otherwise, click [OK].

Make a document compatible with Office 2003 or 97

  1. Click the [Microsoft Office Button] Button image > [Save As] > “Word 97-2003 Document.”
  2. If the document uses any Office 2007 features, a warning saying that those features may not convert will appear.
  3. Click [Cancel] to exit without changing the file type, OR click [Continue] to make the file comtaptible with 93 or 2003 > Click [Save].

Office 2010

Check Compatibility

  1. Go to "File" > Select the "Info" menu option.
  2. Click the [Check for Issues] drop-down button.
  3. Select "Check Compatibility."

Make a document compatible with Office 2003 or 97

  1. Go to "File" > Select "Save & Send."
  2. Click "Change File Type."
  3. Select "Word 97-2003 Document" > Click the [Save As] button.
  4. Name the file and navigate to where you would like to save it.
  5. Click [Save] when you are finished.
