Myspace Security and Privacy Settings
Whether you want to create a Myspace profile or already have one, you should read the Terms of Use Agreement and follow these steps to protect your personal information from outside users.
Myspace will not automatically protect you from outside users. If you do not change the default settings, you allow anyone to view your personal information.
-
Log in to your Myspace account through the Myspace homepage.
If Myspace prompts you to enter your e-mail and password twice, without displaying an error message the second time, please open a new window and log in again. Don't re-enter your username or password on the original page: this is how hackers access your account and spread spam.
- In the blue box in the top left-hand corner, go to [Account Settings] > Privacy. The general privacy settings will appear.
- To change who can view your profile, comments, friends, photos, status, and mood, click on the “Only my friends" option.
- Uncheck the “Online Now” box at the top of the page to prevent users from seeing whether or not you are currently online.
- Click [Save Changes].
To protect your Myspace even more thoroughly, go to Account Settings > Spam.
- Uncheck the box “Allow non-friends to send me new messages” to block people who are not your friends from sending you messages.
- Under "Friend Requests," check the“Require last name or e-mail address” box. This forces other Myspace users to know either your last name or your e-mail address before they can request to be your friend.
- Under "Comments," check the “require approval before comments are posted” box. This requires you to approve any comments one of your friends makes before it is posted onto your Myspace profile.
- Click [Save Changes].
Even if you change your privacy settings, do not provide any personal information on your profile that could compromise your identity. This information may include your full name, address, birthdate, or even education. Protect yourself by protecting your privacy.
