Open Office 2003 Document in Office 2007 or 2010
Open New Documents with the New Version
A new document, presentation, or spreadsheet in Office 2007 or Office 2010 will automatically be saved in the new Microsoft Office format (.docx, .pptx, .xlsx). These documents have complete access to any Office 2007and 2010 features (Smart Art, Live Preview, Picture Styles). You will not be able to modify any new features used in 2010 or 2007 if you save the file to the 2003 format.
If you have an older version of Office (such as Microsoft Office 2003), you cannot open your Office 2007 or 2010 document without downloading the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for 2007 and 2010 Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats.
Open Old Documents with the New Version
If you open a document created in the Office 2003 program (or an even older program), the document will open in compatibility mode. Unfortunately, compatibility mode does not allow you to use many of the new features in Office 2007 or 2010.
If you make changes to the document and re-save it, Office 2007/2010 will automatically save it in the older version; however, you can convert an older Office document to Office 2007/2010, giving you access to all of the new features.
