Outlook: Request a Read Receipt
Unlike GroupWise, Microsoft Outlook cannot show whether an email has been received or opened by the recipient unless you request a read receipt before sending the email. When you request a read receipt for an email, you will receive an email message back from the recipient's email account letting you know that they opened the email.
Request a read receipt
- Open a new email message.
- Complete the email as you would normally, including a recipient, subject, and message.
- In the "Options" tab in the "Tracking" group, check the boxes next to "Request a read receipt."
When the recipient opens the email, you should get an email notifying you that the email was read. The notification email will have "Read:" and the subject line of the email you sent.
Receive read receipt requests
When you open a message in Outlook for which the sender requested a read receipt, a message box will open asking if you want to send the read receipt or not. Click [Yes] to send the receipt or [No] to keep a receipt from being sent.
