Standardized Support for University Hardware (faculty/staff only)

July 2009

We encourage you to consult with us before making any department computer-related hardware purchase. We will try to help you select appropriate equipment and get a good price. If you purchase one of our recommended hardware items, we are better able to help you with installation, training, operation, and repair. Ordinarily, we cannot provide these services for non-recommended hardware. (Note that all computer acquisitions should be reviewed by Computer Services prior to purchase.)

University Recommended Brands:

  • Desktop systems
    • Current Windows-PC vendor as selected by competitive bid in April of each year
  • Notebook systems
    • Current Windows-PC vendor as selected by competitive bid in April of each year
  • Netbook systems
    • Lenovo (3 year warranty)
    • Samsung (1 year warranty only; system is considered disposable after that time)
  • Tablet system
    • Dell
    • Toshiba
  • Cell Phones/Smart Phones and PDAs (see cuMobile for service and data plan discounts)
    • Windows Mobile-based devices
  • Laser Printers
    • Hewlett-Packard for work groups
    • Brother for individual offices
  • Scanners under $1,000
    • Hewlett-Packard
    Scanners over $1,000
    • Fujitsu

University Unsupported Brands:

  • Apple products (Macintosh, iPhone, etc.)
    • Departmental use is by special permission only due to the higher cost and difficult integration into CedarNet.
  • Palm-based PDAs and phones (Palm, Treo, etc.)
    • Not recommended because of their declining market share and incompatibility with large networks.
    • In some cases, it may be possible to provide a limited connection (i.e., no calendar synchronization).
  • Blackberries
    • Unable to connect to the network because the requisite servers and software are not available to support these devices.
  • Inkjet printers
    • Not deployed for office use due to the high cost of ink compared to laser printers.

Because of staffing limitations, we are not able to provide free support (installation, configuration, repair, etc.) for personally-owned computers and related hardware.  Please submit an online computer service request for your SPC (self-provided computer).
