TechStop: How to Register a Personal Computer or Mobile Device

Before you start...

Information technology strongly recommends that regular users of Cedarville University's wireless network manually register their device(s) so they can connect to the cu-secure network.

Benefits of cu-secure:

  • Reduce the number of times you need to login on your device(s).
  • Utilize an encrypted wireless network (cu-unsecure is not encrypted).
  • Access CedarPrint wireless printing (requires cu-secure connection).

In order to register your device, you will need to know its MAC address. Refer to the tech help page on how to find the MAC address on the type of device(s) you own.

How to register an Android device

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android device (phone, phablet, or tablet), and make sure the switch next to [Wi-Fi] is set to [On].
  2. Tap [Wi-Fi], and wait for available networks to be discovered. Tap [cu-secure] to start connecting to the network.
  3. Your device should automatically detect the following network settings:
  • Security: 802.1x EAP
  • EAP Method: PEAP
  • Phase 2 Authentication: None
  • CA certificate: (unspecified)
  1. Enter your CedarNet username in the "Identity" field. Leave the "Anonymous Identity" field blank.
  2. Enter your CedarNet password in the "Password" field.Tap [Connect]. Your device should return to the wireless network list and show that it has successfully connected to cu-secure.
  3. Tap the back button to return to the main settings screen. Tap [About Phone] (on an a tablet , this may be labeled [About Tablet] or [About Device]).
  4. Tap [Status]. Scroll down to where the "Wi-Fi MAC Address" is listed and write down the series of numbers and letters (the MAC address should be in the format: 1a:2b:3c:4d:5e:6f).
  5. Open your device's Internet browser > Navigate to cedar.to/manualreg > Log in with your CedarNet username and password.
  6. Enter the MAC address that you wrote down from step 7.
  7. Select [Android Device] from the drop-down menu > Tap [Submit]. You can leave the last two fields blank.

Note:

Within two business days, a representative from information technology will email you to confirm your device registration. Until then, your device's connection to the Internet through cu-secure may not work completely--you will be prompted to log in through the CU website, but you may not be able to access the website. Once the registration is completed, your connection should work correctly.

  4. In the upper left-hand corner, tap [Back] to return to the main settings page.
  5. Find the MAC address for your device and copy it to your device's clipboard.
  6. Open Safari > Navigate to cedar.to/manualreg.
