Use Document Navigation Pane in Word
In Word 2010, you can view the Navigation Pane, which organizes your document into a series of headings and pages. This can be helpful if you have a large document with lots of headings and sections. If the Navigation Pane does not display, click [View] tab > Locate the "Show" group > Click "Navigation Pane" checkbox. If you are using Word 2007, the option is listed as "Document Map." (This is similar, though does not have the features described below.)
View/Organize Headings (move/delete sections)
- Click one of the headings displayed in the navigation pane to jump to that section of the document.
- Click a heading and drag-and-drop to move an entire section reorder the document.
- Right-click a heading > choose delete to remove entire section.
View Pages
Click the center tab (in the Navigation pane) to view your document by page thumbnails.
Search for Text
- Return to first tab (looking at headings) and type a search term in the search bar (headings display as yellow to indicate where the term is found).
- Type a different search term in the search bar > click on the third tab to see the search term in context.
This function is not available in PowerPoint 2007 or earlier. If you would like to install PowerPoint 2010, see the help page on how to Upgrade to Office 2010.
