Use Google Mail Desktop Notifications
Google Mail desktop notifications allow you to work fully on a project without checking your email every few minutes by displaying a “pop-up” reminder on your computer screen when you receive an email and/or when you receive a Chat message. It is important to note that desktop notifications are only supported in the Google Chrome browser at this time, so you will need to install and use Google Chrome if you want to receive desktop notifications.
When your account is new, you will see a banner across the top of your Mail window when you log in. It will say “Click here to enable desktop notifications for Cedarville University Mail.” If you click to enable the notifications, Chome will also prompt you to confirm by clicking [Allow]. This process will automatically turn desktop notifications on for all new messages.
If you do not see the banner in your Mail window, you can turn notifications on in “Settings” by following these steps:
- Open Google Mail.
- Click the gear-shaped drop-down [Settings] button on the right-hand side and choose “Settings” from the resulting list.
- In the [General] tab, scroll to “Desktop Notifications.”
- Click the radio button to turn “New mail notifications on,” or “Important mail notifications on” if you only want to be notified when you receive a message that Google flags as important based on your history.
- Click [Save Changes] (located at the bottom of the page).
- Chrome will prompt you to allow these notifications at the top of the window (“Allow mail.google.com to show desktop notifications?”). Click [Allow] to confirm.
If the desktop notifications still do not display after running this process, you may need to check that Chrome is not blocking mail.google.com from sending notifications.
- In the upper right-hand corner of Chrome, click on the button with three parallel lines (the “Customize and Control Google Chrome” button, formerly the Wrench icon).
- In the resulting drop-down box, select “Settings.”
- At the bottom of the page, click “Show advanced settings….”
- Under “Privacy,” click [Content settings...].
- Under “Notifications,” click on [Manage exceptions...].
- In the resulting box, hostname “https://mail.google.com:443” should be labeled “Allow”. If it is listed, but labeled “Block,” click on the name and select the x next to the name to delete that exception.
- Click [OK].
