Use PowerPoint Link and Action Buttons
If you would like to link to an outside source within your Powerpoint presentation, you have the option of using the following two tools. These instructions are for Office 2007 and 2010.
Hyperlink
The hyperlink button will allow you to directly link to a slide from another presentation, a custom show, or a web page with just a click.
To add a link in your presentation, follow these instructions:
- Open the PowerPoint Document.
- Highlight the text or object you would like to hyperlink.
- Select the "Insert" tab > Click [Hyperlink] under the "Links" group.
- Use the "Link to:" menu on the left to determine what you would like to link to. For example, to link to a web page, make sure "Existing File or Web Page" is selected and type the web URL in the "Address:" box.
- Click [OK].
- Test the link by opening your PowerPoint as a slideshow (full screen). Single click the link.
A PPT hyperlink can also link to a file on one of your drives (with the exception of your C: drive, which will not work in any circumstance) only if you are running the show on-campus. If you are off-campus, you can use a path to any portable medium that you have with you (thumb drive, CD, diskette).
Action Button
Another option in PPT is an action button. An Action button creates a hyperlink that activates when the button is clicked during the presentation (any of the hyperlink options listed above can be activated with an action button). In addition, PPT has some action buttons which are already created that play movie files and/or sounds when activated.
To add an action button to your presentation, follow these instructions:
- Open the PowerPoint Document.
- Highlight the text or object you would like to hyperlink.
- Select the "Insert" tab > Click [Action] under the "Links" group.
- Under "Hyperlink to:," choose what you would link to link the button to.
- Click [OK]. Test the button by clicking on it.
