Web Filtering FAQ
Cedarville University has implemented a web filtering system for your online protection.
Listed below are some frequently asked questions about web filtering in general, and the "Cedarville University Internet Access Login" screen in particular.
If your question does not appear in this computer help page, you are encouraged to email Computer Services or call extension 7905 during normal business hours (from any campus phone).
Why do I have to log in to get Internet access?
Logging in (using your CedarNet username and password) allows the University to provide web browsing accountability to faculty, staff, students, and guests.
How often do I have to log in?
You will need to log in the first time that you use your computer (each day) to access an off-campus website.
If 2 hours or more has passed since you last browsed outside of Cedarville's website, the "Cedarville University Internet Access Login" screen will appear, and you will need to log in again.
Why do I have to log in more often sometimes?
Computer Services adjusts system settings on a routine basis. Whenever an adjustment is made, the web filtering system will prompt you to log in again.
Is the Internet Access Login secure?
Yes. When you click the [Authenticate] button, your username and password are encrypted before they are sent over the network.
I am using the cedarwireless-unsecure wireless network. Is the login secure on that network as well?
Yes. The login information is encrypted at the web page level -- no matter which on-campus wired or wireless network you are using.
What should I do if I receive a "certificate error" after logging in at the "Cedarville University Internet Access Login" page?
If you are using Internet Explorer as your browser, click on the "Continue to this website" link if you get a login certificate error.
If you are using Mozilla Firefox 2, choose the "Accept this certificate permanently" option, and then click [OK] if you receive a certificate error.
With Mozilla Firefox 3, click "Or you can add an exception...", then click the [Add Exception] button. Next, click the [Get Certificate] button, and then the [Confirm Security Exception] button. Finally, click the [Resend] button.
How can I block/unblock my access to the Internet?
There are two options available:
You can submit a request to have Internet access from your room blocked . This option blocks the network port in your room so that nobody can access the Internet from your dorm room, yet you may still access the Internet in classrooms, labs, etc. (You may use the same link to request that Internet access to your room be restored.)
You can submit a request to have Internet access from your CedarNet account blocked . This option blocks all access to the Internet from your account (dorm, classrooms, labs, wireless, etc.) You must wait 4 hours before requesting that Internet access for your account be restored (you may use the same link).
Where can I get help?
Please refer to the Internet Accountability Resources computer help page, or contact a Student Life staff member (including Counseling Services) if you would like additional support with your Internet choices.
Send an email to Computer Services or call extension 7905 (from any campus phone) during regular business hours if you have questions that are not answered within these help pages.
