WebCT: Common Problems and WebCT Resources

Troubleshooting Problems

  1. WebCT is case sensitive and does not use any capitalization in usernames. If you are unable to log in to WebCT and are receiving authorization error messages, double-check that you are typing your username in all lower case letters.
  2. If you are having difficulty taking a test or quiz in WebCT, it is probably because a "pop-up blocker" has been installed on your system. (The quiz is treated like a pop-up window in WebCT). Often you can get around the pop-up blocker by holding down the [Ctrl] button while you click on the link. You may also right-click on the link > Click "Open in new tab" or "Open in new window." Or, you may disable or uninstall the pop-up blocker.
  3. One of the problems that students have with WebCT access from home is trying to get to the courses using an older Internet browser. Because of the nature of the tools in WebCT, students must have a recent version of a browser. To help students solve browser issues, there is a "Browser Check" link in the main menu bar at the top of the WebCT window.

Resources

  1. There is a handout outlining the steps to access WebCT and use of the "Check Browser" link. To access the handout, log in to WebCT(student homepage > [Resources] > WebCT Blackboard Courses). The handout is available from a link under "Bookmarks" on the "myWebCT" page.
  2. There are also student manuals covering most of the topics in WebCT.  These are also available from the "Bookmarks" area on the "myWebCT" page.
  3. Another resource is the context-sensitive help on whatever page the student may be on. Check the "Help" link in the main menu bar at the top of the WebCT window.

If you are still experiencing difficulties accessing WebCT, submitting an assignment or taking an exam, please:

  1. Contact your professor to verify that you are correctly entered into the class (double-check the section number.)
  2. Submit an online computer service request > Choose "Other" for problem type.
