Windows XP: Create Desktop Shortcuts

Shortcuts are icons you use to directly access files, folders, or programs more quickly.

Since your desktop is saved to your H: drive, the same set of shortcuts will appear when you log in to any University computer.

Adding or deleting shortcuts on one computer will affect your desktop on every University computer.

Create a Shortcut

  1. Locate the file, folder. or program that you would like to create a shortcut for on your desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file, folder, or program.
  3. Choose "Send To" > Select "Desktop (create shortcut)."
  4. The shortcut will appear on your desktop. (Shortcuts are indicated by a little black arrow in a white box at the lower left hand corner of the icon).

Rename a Shortcut

Shortcuts are generally named "Shortcut to ______ ." To rename a shortcut, right-click on the shortcut > Select "Rename." Type in the new name of the shortcut and press [Enter].

Delete a Shortcut

Simply right-click on the shortcut and select "Delete." This will only delete the shortcut; not the file, folder, or program with which it is associated.

Keywords: screen, buttons, login, appearance, programs, quick, quickly, icon, desk top, screen, windows
