Word 2007: Insert File Path Name into Document Footer

Below are instructions to insert the path and/or file name of a Word document into the footer or the header of that document.

By inserting the path and file name into the footer or header, this will help you to know the location of your document. 

  1. Open Microsoft Word
  2. Click on the "Insert" tab
  3. In the "Header & Footer" group, click "Header" or "Footer"
  4. Click on the desired Header or Footer
  5. Click on the "Insert" tab
  6. In the "Text" group, click on the "Quick Parts" option
  7. Click "Field"
  8. In the "Field Dialog Box" under "Files Names," select "FileName"
  9. In the "Field properties" area, select the desired format
  10. In the "Field options" area, check "Add path to filename"
  11. The path and file name will now appear in the header or footer
