Word: Citation and Bibliography

Word's Citations & Bibliography feature allows you to automatically generate a bibliography in any format required. This feature generates the in-text citations for you as well as the final bibliography at the end.

In-Text Citation

To add an in-text citation for a new source:

  1. Select the "References" tab > Locate the "Citations & Bibliography" group.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow text next to the "Style" icon > Choose the preferred style.
  3. Click "Insert Citation" > Select "Add New Source...."
  4. Fill in the source information > Click [OK].
  5. When you finish, the in-text citation will appear and the source will be saved for later use.

To add an in-text citation for a previously used source:

  1. Select the "References" tab > Locate the "Citations & Bibliography" group.
  2. Click "Insert Citation" > Select one of the sources you have previously inserted.


To add the bibliography field in your paper:

  1. Place your cursor where you would like the bibliography to begin.
  2. Select the "References" tab > In the "Citations & Bibliography" group, select the "Bibliography" drop-down menu.
  3. Choose one of the bibliography formats.

The bibliography will contain all of the sources that you have added already with the in-text citation feature.
