He received his doctorate from the University of Akron in United States History. He taught United States History and American National Government at Mount Vernon Nazarene College(now University) for six years. While there, he served as Director of the Honors Program. Since coming to Cedarville in 2000, he has remained involved in Honors education by serving on the Honors Council and teaching the Honors Senior Colloquium series. For the department, Dr. Mach teaches the second half of the U.S. History survey, the Introduction to History course for majors, Research in American History, and upper level United States History electives. Dr. Mach loves political history and his research has focused on the 19th century, particularly in Ohio during the Civil War, Reconstruction, and Gilded Age eras. His students will tell you that he loves the Gilded Age and fears it is too often ignored! Dr. Mach, along with colleagues Dr. Mark Caleb Smith and Dr. Marc Clauson, are currently researching Christian involvement in politics in the 20th century and evaluating recent trends among Christian voter blocks. </p> <div class="space"></div> <h3>Educational Background</h3> <p>B.A in History, Cedarville College</p> <p>M.A. in History, Cleveland State University</p> <p>Ph.D. in History, University of Akron</p> <div class="space"></div> <h3>Professional Achievements</h3> <p>Prior to coming to Cedarville in 2000, Dr. Mach served as an Honors Program Director and an Honors Seminar Coordinator. He has also been named as an Advanced Placement Reader in United States History for the Educational Testing Service. At Cedarville, Dr. Mach spearheaded the university's successful pursuit for reaccreditation from the Higher Learning Commission serving as Self-Study Coordinator.
