BIO 4410 -- Developmental Biology
Syllabus -- Fall, 2011

Course Goals - Students will:

  1. learn the basic principles of human embryology and development.
  2. develop critical thinking skills, and will learn to visualize three-dimensionally.
  3. correlate development with postnatal anatomy
  4. analyze key clinical and ethical issues in the light of fetal development.

Textbook: Larsen's Human Embryology (Fourth Edition), by Gary C. Schoenwolf, et al. Churchill Livingstone, 2009.


Lab Manual: A Photographic Atlas of Developmental Biology, by Shirley Wright, Morton, 2005.

Course Resources: This Website, plus Simbryo software (CedarNet).

Course Content: Three 50-minute lectures and one two-hour lab per week.

Evaluation: Three mid-term lecture exams (multiple choice), plus a comprehensive lecture final. A copy of each midterm exam answer key will be available in my office for one week only after the exam. There will also be two lab practical exams.

Grading: The total course grade is based on 400 points:

  • 3 Lecture exams @ 60 = 180
  • 2 Lab exams @ 50 = 100
  • Final exam(comprehensive: lab + lecture) = 120
