This is a low-power view of lung parenchyma. Shown in the rectangular area is an alveolar sac, composed of multiple individual alveoli, where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occurs. Each alveolus is lined by simple squamous epithelium. Note the respiratory bronchiole at the bottom of the image.
