MUMMIES

Mummification is the preservation of the body of a dead person or animal.

The Egyptians were absolute masters at this craft.

The process of mummification is complex. There are actually 70 steps which need to be carried out over 70 days.

The first step was to prepare the body. All of the internal organs were removed, and placed into four jars, called the canopic jars. The corpse was then dried out with salts, and coated with resins. When all of that was complete, the workers would wrap the body with many layers of bandeges.
