Officially The Kingdom Of Spain, Spanish Espana or Reino De Espana, this country is located in the extreme southwest of the European continent. It occupies about 85 percent of the Iberian Peninsula, which it shares with its smaller neighbor, Portugal. Spain is bordered on the west by Portugal and in the northeast it borders France. Spain's only other land border is in the far south with Gibraltar. The country is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the east and southeast, by the Atlantic Ocean to the northwest and southwest, and by the Bay of Biscay (an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean) to the northwest. The total area of the national territory is 194,898 square miles (504,784 square kilometres). The capital is Madrid.
