Major Religions

In in the country of Mexico, there are several major religions that impact the Mexican's daily lives. However, there are two major religions: Protestantism and Catholicism.

Protestantism came from Catholicism in the 1500's. In 1500, Christianity was in a mess. The Catholic Church had already split into Eastern, Orthodox, and Western Roman churches, and as of the 11th century the "modern" enlightenment contributed to protests against the Papacy and Rome. The Catholics who disliked the church began to form several other denominations, including Protestantism.

PROTESTANTISM:

The Protestant denominations believe different things than the Catholic Church. For example, Protestants avoid a literal interpretation of communion, instead regarding the bread and wine as symbolic of the Christ's body and blood. Protestantism is a part of Christianity, believing also that the only way to heaven is by the free gift of salvation given to us by Christ through his death and ressurection. CATHOLICISM:

Catholicism is also a part of Christianity, but views salvation differently. The majority of Catholics believe that the way to heaven is through performing good deeds, attending mass and confession, taking communion and various other things. They also take Christ's statement, "This is my body," in literal terms. For the Catholic, there is no difference between the physical body of Jesus Christ and the consecrated, or blessed, wafer.
