How Did We Get This Carol?

"Silent Night" was written by a German man named Joseph Mohr in 1816. His friend Franz Gruber wrote the music for Joseph's poem on Christmas Eve. Franz Gruber played the music on his guitar as they both sang it for Midnight Mass. Later, the tune was changed a little to make it sound the way it does today.

Nur das traute heilige Paar.
Holder Knab' im lockigten Haar,

Here Are the Words in English

Silent night Holy night
All is calm all is bright
'Round yon virgin Mother and Child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
