Dipping Day
Christmas Eve is referred to as "Dipping Day" in Sweden because people dip pieces of rye bread in hot cooking liquid from the Christmas ham. This is to bring them good luck in the next year. Long ago, in Sweden, there was a famine, and all there was to eat was rye bread. So, to remember that time, the people of Sweden use rye bread on Dipping Day.
Christmas Eve is also when a small elf-like figure, called Tomte, visits the families and brings presents. He leaves the presents on the floor and then leaves. On Christmas Day the families open the presents that have been left by Tomte.
