Petey the Penguin

It was a cold dark winter May when Daddy and Mommy started to talk about her journey. She was leaving to go to the sea in order to find some food. She couldn’t stay here with Daddy and me because it was the worst part of the polar winter.

I was still in my egg and hadn’t hatched yet. He agreed to watch over me while Mom was gone. Isn’t he great!?

Being in the egg for those nine weeks wasn’t that boring, but I felt bad for my Dad. Dad would balance me on his feet. It was so nice and warm because of his skin and feathers. My Dad was a very large penguin! Even so, he would get cold sometimes, so he would take me to hang out with some of his buddies. I would always feel warmer in these groups, and it was always more fun!

Time passed quickly for me, but I’m sure it must have been long for Dad. Because he was taking care of me, he could not eat for nine whole weeks! My Daddy was no longer a very large penguin.

Luckily Mom came back a little before I was born and Dad was now able to go and find some food. Dad did whine a little. After all he did have to travel about sixty miles to have his first Big Mac in over 2 months!

Personally, I don’t understand why Mommy and Daddy do it this way. They say it’s so that I can learn to be more independent, but I really think that they like spending time alone with me. I think it’s pretty cool, too.

So that’s all about me. I would love to hear about your family! Do remember when you were born? Write me a letter!
