History Story

David and Goliath

A long time ago there lived a family of rocks with five children. Mary was the oldest with Phil coming right after her. Next was Dan who was followed by Amy and the last of the bunch was Sarah. They lived in the middle of a river and the river was in a valley. All five of the rock children were smooth and round from the waters rushing over them for so many years.

One day Sarah, who was the youngest, asked her brothers and sisters what their purpose was and why God had made them. None of her siblings could answer her question. It was not to long after Sarah had asked this question of her siblings, that God showed Sarah why He had made them and so Sarah recounts the story.

One day as my sisters, brothers and I were playing in the river turning over and over letting the water flow over us, I heard a lot of shouting. I looked up and saw on one hill bordering our valley an army that was enormous. They were shouting at another army on the opposite side of the valley. The other army was also on a hill that bordered our valley. The enormous army, which was made up of Philistines, was shouting at the Israelite army. The Philistines were challenging the Israelites to send just one of their soldiers to fight their renowned soldier named Goliath. Goliath was one of the largest man I had very seen! Every day the Philistines would come out of their tents and shout at the Israelites challenging them to fight Goliath, but no one from the Israelite army would take up the challenge.

One day, after many days of the Philistines challenging the Israelites a young man, who was not very big came walking down into the valley. I could not believe my eyes. He was too small to fight the giant Goliath. The Philistines started to laugh because they also thought that the young man, whose name was David, was no match for Goliath.

David walked to the river where I lived. He knelt down next to the water. He put his hand into the water and he picked up Mary. He then put her in a pouch at his waist. Again he put his hand into the water and this time he picked up both Phil and Dan. He put both of them in his pouch. At this point I was so scared. I was afraid for Mary, Phil and Dan, but I was also afraid that he would stick his hand back into the water and pick me up. Well, my fears became reality, because he did put his hand back in the water. I remember seeing his large hand close over Amy and myself. His hand was warm and firm. The next thing I knew I was in the pouch with Mary, Phil, Dan and Amy. I was very scared, but I was really glad that I was not alone.

As David walked up to Goliath, Mary, Phil, Dan, Amy and I were bouncing up and down in the pouch. When David came to a halt, I heard Goliath shout at David with contempt saying that David would be killed. David replied to Goliath saying that even though he only had a staff, sling and five stones, which were my siblings and myself, that the God of Israel would deliver Goliath into his hands. Of course, Goliath laughed at David because he did not believe in the God of Israel.

David reached into his pocket. I couldn’t believe it; his hand was coming straight towards me! He picked me up and put me into his sling. He twirled me around and around until I was almost sick, then I flew out of the sling heading straight for Goliath’s head. This impact was so hard that my whole body quaked, but the impact on Goliath was worse. Goliath fell down dead, because David had thrown me so hard. It was then that I knew why God had created me. He had a plan to use me to defeat the Philistines even though I was small and insignificant.
