Awesome Amphibians



What are "Amphibians"?
        "Amphibians" (Am-fib-ee-uns) are a certain type of animal.  Look at the checklist below and see if you can think of some animals that might be amphibians.

            ~ They have a backbone (they are "vertebrates")

            ~ They have moist (or wet) skin

            ~ Their bodies have no scales, hair, feathers, or claws.

            ~ They are "cold-blooded," meaning that their body
                temperature is the same as their surroundings (air,
                water, or soil)

What do you think "amphibians" could be?  Can you think of at least one example?
Examples of Amphibians: 

                ~ Frogs

                ~ Toads

                ~ Salamanders

                ~ Newts
Frog Facts:

        ~ Some frogs can survive in freezing temperatures

        ~ They use their thin, moist skin to breathe oxygen

        ~ Baby frogs are called "tadpoles" and they hatch from eggs

        ~ Tadpoles have tails, and as it grows to an adult frog, the tail
            shrinks

        ~ Frogs like to live in ponds

        ~ Frogs "hibernate" (similar to sleeping for a very long time)
            through the winter so they will stay alive
