Careers in Social Studies Education
The AYASS program prepares students for a career in the field of teaching. The program prepares students to teach history, government, economics, geography, and sociology in grades seven–12. Graduates will leave Cedarville having met the requirements for licensure in Social Studies Education from the state of Ohio. Ohio’s teacher standards are recognized by 42 other states in the U.S.
The AYASS program has a capstone internship, often referred to as student teaching. This is a semester-long experience where the student will teach full time in a local school under the direction of a professional teacher. The program provides a variety of experiences in the classroom before the student internship to prepare student teachers.
In the Department of History and Government, we recommend internships in all of our majors and require them in some. We offer the DC Semester for students in any major, and we have recently finalized a relationship with the Advanced Technical Intelligence Center for students to gain an internship experience while going through their “Analyst Boot Camp” for a semester. The ATIC facility is short drive from campus and provides a great opportunity for students interested in intelligence, homeland security, law enforcement, international studies, and a variety of other fields. Even if you do not pursue one of these two programs, we will work with you to find an internship in your field either near campus or near your home for your summer break.
